Saint Cloud State University

Nestled in the heart of Minnesota, Saint Cloud State University (SCSU) boasts a rich and dynamic history, evolving from its humble beginnings in 1869 as the Third State Normal School. Initially dedicated to training educators, the institution started with just five faculty members and 50 pioneering students, predominantly women, in the modest Stearns House. This early focus on accessible education laid the groundwork for a university committed to growth and adapting to the needs of its community. The opening of the iconic Old Main building in 1874 further solidified its presence and commitment to expanding learning opportunities.

Over the decades, SCSU steadily broadened its academic scope, transforming from a state normal school to St. Cloud State Teachers College in 1921, marking its expanded role beyond elementary education. A significant milestone arrived in 1925 with the conferral of its first bachelor's degrees, signaling its transition into a more comprehensive higher education institution. This evolution continued with the dropping of "Teachers" from its name in 1957, becoming St. Cloud State College, and finally achieving university status in 1975. By this time, it had grown to encompass five colleges and a graduate school, later adding applied doctoral degrees in 2007, reflecting its dedication to advanced scholarship and diverse academic programs.

Today, Saint Cloud State University remains a pivotal institution, continuously adapting to the changing landscape of higher education. While facing recent enrollment shifts and financial challenges, SCSU has proactively restructured its offerings, embracing innovative strategies like expanding online courses through partnerships to better serve a diverse student body, including non-traditional learners.
