Saint Cloud State University

Saint Cloud State University began its journey in 1869 as the Third State Normal School, a foundational institution dedicated to preparing educators for Minnesota. Starting with a single renovated hotel and a small faculty, the school quickly grew, adapting to the evolving needs of its students. Early on, it notably accommodated a significant number of women, converting its original Stearns House into a women's dormitory as new facilities like the Old Main building opened.

Throughout its history, Saint Cloud State demonstrated a remarkable capacity for growth and adaptation. It expanded its academic offerings significantly, introducing a junior college curriculum in 1898, awarding its first bachelor's degrees in 1925, and eventually offering applied doctoral degrees starting in 2007. This evolution culminated in 1975 when it officially became Saint Cloud State University, transforming into a comprehensive institution comprising five distinct colleges and a graduate school.

Like many institutions, SCSU has faced contemporary challenges, including a significant enrollment decline in recent years. However, the university is actively responding with strategic initiatives to ensure its future vitality.
