Saint Michael's College

Nestled in Vermont, Saint Michael's College stands as a testament to its enduring Edmundite legacy, offering a vibrant learning environment for today's students. What began as Saint Michael's Institute in 1904 with just 34 students, founded by priests who fled anti-clericalism in France, has gracefully evolved into a distinguished private residential college. This institution is renowned for its commitment to a holistic educational experience, blending rigorous academics with a strong sense of community and service.

The college's history is marked by significant milestones that shaped its unique character. It quickly moved beyond its initial high school program, establishing graduate studies by 1939. Post-World War II, Saint Michael's College played a pivotal role in accommodating an influx of GI Bill students, even utilizing military barracks to expand its capacity. A testament to its humanitarian spirit, the college opened its doors to approximately 130 refugees from the Hungarian Revolution in 1956, providing them with an opportunity to learn English and rebuild their lives. The cultural vibrancy of the campus was also elevated with the opening of Saint Michael's Playhouse in 1947, which continues to bring professional summer theater to Vermont, offering students invaluable behind-the-scenes experience.

Saint Michael's embraced a new era in 1970 when it officially became a co-educational institution, with its first female graduates receiving degrees just two years later. This move further enriched the campus community, reflecting a forward-thinking approach while maintaining its deep-rooted values. With a student body of 1,323 and an endowment of $0.1 billion, the college continues its mission under President Richard Plumb, upholding its motto, "Quis ut Deus," as it prepares students to make meaningful contributions to the world.
