About Salem University
From a local academy to an international hub, Salem University offers a dynamic educational journey.
Nestled in West Virginia, Salem University, established in 1888, has a rich and dynamic history that reflects a spirit of adaptability and innovation. Originally founded as the Academy of Salem, it swiftly grew into a college, serving for much of the 20th century as a pillar for liberal arts, teacher education, and nursing programs. While maintaining its non-sectarian approach, Salem proudly carried an affiliation with the Seventh Day Baptists, fostering a strong community for its 835 students.
A pivotal moment arrived in 1989 when Salem forged an alliance with Japan's Teikyo University, transforming into Salem-Teikyo University. This groundbreaking partnership shifted its focus dramatically towards international education, welcoming nearly 200 Japanese freshmen in a unique experiment to immerse them in American culture and fluent English while earning a valuable U.S. degree. This era showcased Salem's pioneering spirit in cross-cultural academic exchange and laid the groundwork for its global perspective.
Following the conclusion of the Teikyo alliance in 2000, Salem continued its evolution, first as Salem International University under new ownership and then, since 2017, as Salem University, a private for-profit institution committed to its educational mission. While its historic Administration Building was recently demolished, the university has carefully preserved its original bell and historical documents, housing them in the Benedum Library. This act symbolizes Salem's dedication to honoring its storied past while continually adapting to shape future generations.
