Salem University

Salem University, a private for-profit institution with a student body of 835, boasts a rich and dynamic history dating back to its founding in 1888. Originally established as the Academy of Salem by the Eastern Seventh Day Baptist Association, it quickly achieved college status in 1890. For much of the 20th century, Salem was a cornerstone for liberal arts, teacher education, and nursing, maintaining a non-sectarian approach while upholding its Seventh Day Baptist affiliation.

The university experienced notable growth and transformation, especially during the 1960s with significant campus expansion, including the development of its "Valley of Learning." A pivotal moment arrived in 1989 when it forged a unique alliance with Teikyo University of Tokyo, Japan, rebranding as "Salem-Teikyo University." This collaboration brought nearly 200 Japanese freshmen to Salem, immersing them in American culture and English language acquisition, marking a distinct international focus in its academic journey.

Following the conclusion of the Teikyo alliance in 2000, the institution continued to evolve under new ownership, first as "Salem International University" and ultimately returning to its current name, "Salem University," in 2017. While its historic Administration Building was demolished in 2023 due to safety concerns, the university proudly preserves its past, housing original historical documents and the building's bell in its Benedum Library. Salem University stands as a testament to enduring educational commitment and remarkable adaptability.
