The college's rich history began as San Bernardino Junior College, originally sharing campuses between local high schools with a modest enrollment of just 140 students and a single administrator. From these humble beginnings, SBVC has blossomed into a comprehensive institution, significantly expanding its reach and offerings. It now serves multiple high school districts across a vast, nearly 500-square-mile area, demonstrating its profound impact on regional education.

SBVC stands out for its innovative academic programs, particularly its strong ties with Middle College High School (MCHS). This unique partnership, designed in 2001, allows bright, underserved high school students to concurrently enroll at both MCHS and SBVC. This groundbreaking initiative empowers scholars to earn substantial college credits and even complete an Associate of Arts Degree before receiving their high school diploma, preparing them exceptionally well for a four-year university and future success.
