San Diego Mesa College

San Diego Mesa College stands as a cornerstone of educational opportunity in Southern California, with a history rooted in the expansion of community learning. Its story begins even before its official founding, tracing back to 1914 when the San Diego City Schools Board of Education first authorized post-secondary classes, laying the groundwork for accessible higher education in the region.

The direct journey to establishing San Diego Mesa College as a dedicated institution began with significant community support. In 1956, San Diego voters made a pivotal decision, authorizing the first of two bonds specifically to establish and construct the college. This commitment led to the development of an expansive 85-acre campus on a scenic mesa, designed to serve the growing educational needs of the community.

By 1963, San Diego Mesa College officially opened its doors, marking a new chapter in local education. Starting with a modest but dedicated group of four faculty members serving 35 students, initially operating from Kearny High's 900 building while its own campus was completed, Mesa College quickly grew into a vital hub for post-secondary learning. It continues to embody a strong commitment to providing accessible, high-quality education, empowering students to build bright futures.
