Sandhills Community College, a pillar of public higher education founded in 1963, has been a launching pad for thousands of students pursuing their academic and career aspirations. Guided by its inspiring motto, "Learn • Engage • Belong," SCC fosters a vibrant and inclusive environment where personal growth and community connection are paramount. With a current student body of 4,000, it remains dedicated to providing accessible, high-quality education to the Sandhills region.

The college's deep roots in the community are evident from its very inception. Local citizens championed its establishment, securing a $1 million bond issue and tax levy, demonstrating a powerful commitment to local education. From its groundbreaking in 1964 on 180 acres donated by Mrs. Mary Luman Meyer, Sandhills Community College quickly established a unique architectural identity. Its campus, featuring courtyards inspired by local charm and palladium windows echoing historic Southern Pines estates, reflects a thoughtful integration of local heritage into its learning spaces.

Opening its doors officially on October 1, 1965, Sandhills initially held classes in various temporary downtown locations before moving to its permanent, beautifully designed campus in September 1966. The college has been shaped by visionary leaders, from its first president Raymond Stone to the long-serving John Dempsey, and now Alexander Stewart, who took the helm in 2023. This continuity of leadership, combined with a strong community foundation, ensures a supportive and enriching student experience, empowering individuals to achieve their goals within a college that truly embodies its motto.
