About Sandhills Community College
Sandhills Community College: A local gem where learning meets community.
Sandhills Community College, established in 1963, stands as a cornerstone of education in Moore County, North Carolina. Guided by its inspiring motto – "Learn • Engage • Belong" – the college is dedicated to providing an enriching environment where over 4,000 students can thrive academically and personally. It's a place where aspirations are nurtured, community bonds are forged, and every individual is encouraged to reach their full potential, making it an excellent choice for prospective students and families seeking a supportive and engaging educational journey.
The college's origins are deeply rooted in strong community support. Shortly after its chartering, citizens of Moore County demonstrated their commitment by voting in favor of a $1 million bond issue for capital construction and a tax levy to maintain facilities. This foundational support allowed for the creation of a campus with unique architectural charm. Designed by local architects Hayes-Howell and Associates, the buildings feature inviting courtyards, inspired by local eateries, and palladium windows reminiscent of historic Southern Pines homes, creating an aesthetically pleasing and welcoming atmosphere.
From its initial classes held in temporary downtown Southern Pines locations in 1965 to its move to the current beautiful campus in 1966, Sandhills Community College has consistently grown and adapted. Under the leadership of its presidents, including Raymond Stone, John Dempsey, and most recently Alexander Stewart, the college has maintained its focus on student success and community engagement. Students at Sandhills benefit from a close-knit environment, dedicated faculty, and programs designed to prepare them for both further academic pursuits and direct entry into the workforce, truly embodying its mission to foster learning, engagement, and belonging for all.
