About Santa Monica College

Santa Monica College: A dynamic public community college with a rich history.

Santa Monica College stands as a cornerstone of accessible higher education in Southern California, proudly serving a diverse student body of nearly 30,000 as a public community college since its founding in 1929. From its modest beginnings with 153 students operating out of Santa Monica High School, SMC has grown into a vital institution, committed to providing quality learning experiences and pathways to success for its community. Its journey reflects a remarkable resilience, adapting through significant historical events and evolving to meet the changing needs of its students.

The college's history is marked by continuous development and determination. After facing the challenges of the Great Depression and even relocating classes to temporary 'Splinterville' bungalows following an earthquake, SMC established its permanent home on Pico Boulevard in 1952. It successfully navigated a severe financial crisis in the early 1970s, demonstrating its unwavering commitment to its faculty, staff, and students. This strong foundation has allowed Santa Monica College to become a significant educational hub, constantly expanding its facilities and programs, including the construction of Corsair Stadium and a new library.

Today, Santa Monica College continues its mission of empowering students, embracing the complexities of the 21st century. While it has faced modern challenges, including a controversial tuition plan in 2012 and a tragic off-campus incident that led to a campus lockdown in 2013, the college remains dedicated to fostering an engaging and supportive environment. SMC provides a dynamic student experience, preparing graduates for transfer to four-year universities or direct entry into the workforce.
