The legacy of Schreiner University began in 1917, when Captain Charles Schreiner Sr. initiated the "Schreiner Institute," opening its doors in 1923. Initially a military institute for young boys, it combined secondary and junior college curricula. A pivotal shift occurred in 1971 with the cessation of military training, leading to a renewed focus on college curriculum in 1973 under the new name "Schreiner College." By 1981, it transitioned to a four-year institution, culminating in its re-designation as "Schreiner University" in 2001, when it also began offering master's degrees.

Today, Schreiner University is a hub of academic engagement, hosting dynamic lecture series and annual academic conferences, including a popular culture symposium that sparks lively discussions. The university's commitment to its students is underscored by its recent fundraising success, surpassing a $50 million capital campaign goal in 2017. A significant portion of these funds—nearly $30 million—is specifically earmarked for student scholarships, dramatically increasing prior funding levels.
