The institution's rich history began in 1917 with Captain Charles Schreiner Sr.'s vision for the "Schreiner Institute," officially established in 1923. Initially a residential military school for young boys, offering both secondary and junior college curricula, Schreiner has continuously evolved. A pivotal shift occurred in 1971 with the discontinuation of military training, followed by its re-establishment as "Schreiner College" in 1973, focusing purely on higher education. By 1981, it proudly transitioned into a four-year college, laying the groundwork for its current comprehensive offerings.

Today, as Schreiner University since 2001, it offers a robust academic portfolio including master's degrees. The university is committed to enhancing its academic prowess, evidenced by plans to add endowed chairs in mathematics, science, and humanities, and to host a visiting artist, performer, or designer in residence.
