About Seattle Pacific University
Seattle Pacific University: Engaging minds and shaping futures since 1891 in the heart of Seattle.
Seattle Pacific University, nestled in the vibrant city of Seattle, has been a beacon of learning and service since its founding in 1891. Guided by its inspiring motto, "Engaging the Culture, Changing the World," SPU is a private university committed to fostering an environment where students can grow intellectually, spiritually, and professionally. With a dedicated student body of over 2,100, SPU offers an intimate educational experience designed to prepare graduates for impactful lives.
Established by Free Methodist pioneers, Seattle Pacific began its journey as a seminary with a mission to train missionaries for global service. What started as the "Ross Seminary" quickly grew, holding its first classes in 1893 in its notable permanent building. Over the decades, the institution evolved significantly, transforming from Seattle Seminary to Seattle Pacific College, and ultimately, to Seattle Pacific University, reflecting its expansion into a comprehensive, doctoral degree-granting institution. This rich history underscores a continuous commitment to adapting and serving a broader educational purpose.
While rooted in a long tradition of service, Seattle Pacific University has recently navigated complex challenges. The university has faced significant internal and external discussions regarding its hiring policies and, in response to broader national trends and internal issues, has undertaken strategic academic program and faculty reductions in 2023 and 2024. Despite these adjustments, the university remains dedicated to providing a quality education, focusing on programs that continue to prepare students to engage critically with the world and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
The student experience at SPU is shaped by its Christian foundation and its dynamic urban setting. While recent events have sparked important dialogue and protests among the faculty and student body, these discussions reflect an active campus community engaged with complex issues. Under the leadership of President Deana L. Porterfield, Seattle Pacific continues its mission, striving to equip students with the knowledge and character to make a positive difference in a rapidly changing world.
