Seattle Pacific University

Seattle Pacific University, established in 1891 by Free Methodist pioneers, stands as a private institution dedicated to its motto: "Engaging the Culture, Changing the World." Originally conceived to train missionaries for global service, SPU has evolved from its humble beginnings as the "Ross Seminary" into a doctoral degree-granting university in the vibrant city of Seattle. With a student body of 2,101, it offers a distinctive educational experience within a faith-based context.

The university's journey began with the construction of its first permanent building in 1893, marking the start of its educational mission. Over the decades, it expanded its scope and changed its name several times, ultimately becoming Seattle Pacific University in 1977. However, recent years have presented significant challenges, including a notable controversy in May 2022 when its board of trustees voted to uphold policies banning LGBTQ+ individuals from employment, sparking student protests and a legal investigation by the Washington Attorney General's office.

Under new leadership with President Deana L. Porterfield, who assumed office in 2023, the university has navigated difficult financial landscapes. Citing national trends in higher education and declining enrollment, the university announced substantial budget cuts and faculty layoffs in June 2023, with further academic program eliminations, including 19 majors, planned for June 2025. These decisions reflect a period of significant restructuring and adaptation for the institution as it strives to fulfill its mission.
