About Shawnee Community College
Shawnee Community College: Your path to accessible, quality higher education since 1967.
Shawnee Community College stands as a cornerstone of accessible higher education in southern Illinois, established in 1967 as Shawnee College. Its primary mission has always been to offer post-secondary education that mirrors university-level curriculum, directly serving students within Community College District No. 531. As a public community college, it provides an invaluable opportunity for local residents to pursue their academic and career goals close to home, under the leadership of President Tim Taylor.
The college's inception was deeply rooted in Illinois's commitment to expanding higher education access, following the Illinois Board of Higher Education's Master Plan and the Junior College Act of 1965. Officially opening its doors on September 24, 1969, Shawnee College swiftly began shaping futures. It later evolved, rebranding in 1987 to Shawnee Community College, reflecting its growing role and comprehensive offerings within the region.
Shawnee Community College boasts a main campus spanning 152 acres, located conveniently east of Interstate 57. Over the decades, the campus has seen continuous development, from its original 'rustic campus' buildings to significant expansions like the 21,000-square-foot addition in 1989 that introduced dedicated biology and nursing laboratories. Further enhancing its academic and community reach, a 33,000-square-foot Educational Center opened in 2000, providing modern electronic classrooms and a performing arts theater. Most recently, the 22,000-square-foot Medical Arts and Science Building, completed in 2010, underscores its commitment to health sciences education. Beyond the main campus, SCC extends its educational footprint through additional campuses in Anna, Cairo, Metropolis, and Vienna, ensuring widespread access to quality learning experiences.
