Shawnee Community College

Shawnee Community College (SCC) stands as a vital public community college, dedicated to providing accessible post-secondary education within Community College District No. 531. Founded in 1967, SCC offers a curriculum designed to prepare students for further university studies or immediate career entry. Under the leadership of President Tim Taylor, the college continues its mission of serving the diverse educational needs of its community.

The college's establishment was a direct result of far-sighted statewide initiatives in Illinois to expand higher education opportunities. Born from the Illinois Board of Higher Education's Master Plan and the Junior College Act of 1965, Shawnee College initially opened its doors in 1969. From its humble beginnings with original "rustic campus" buildings, SCC has consistently evolved, with significant facility expansions and renovations marking its growth throughout the decades, culminating in a modern and comprehensive campus experience.

Today, Shawnee Community College's main campus spans a generous 152 acres, providing a robust learning environment. Its academic strengths are supported by specialized facilities, including biology and nursing laboratories, general classrooms, and a state-of-the-art Medical Arts and Science Building, highlighting a commitment to health sciences and general education. Beyond the main campus, SCC extends its reach through additional campuses in Anna, Cairo, Metropolis, and Vienna, ensuring that quality education is conveniently accessible across the region.
