Simmons College of Kentucky

Simmons College of Kentucky stands as a proud private Historically Black College and University (HBCU) with a rich legacy stretching back to 1879. More than just an institution, Simmons is a beacon of educational opportunity, guided by its powerful motto, "Non Palma Sine Pulvere" – "No Reward without Effort." The college's roots run deep into the post-Civil War era, born from a profound need within the Black Baptist community of Kentucky. In 1865, a group of 12 Black Baptist churches, led by figures like Pastor Henry Adams, formed the State Convention of Colored Baptist Churches. Recognizing the urgent lack of higher education options for Black individuals—many only one generation removed from slavery—they envisioned a school that would change lives.

This vision crystallized into the Kentucky Normal Theological Institute, which ultimately found its home and permanent campus in Louisville in 1879. This pivotal moment marked the official opening of Simmons College of Kentucky, solidifying its place in the state's educational history as a vital institution for Black higher education. Under the leadership of President Kevin W.
