About Sinte Gleska University

Sinte Gleska: A tribal, land-grant university preserving Lakota culture and fostering community.

Sinte Gleska University stands as a beacon of education rooted in Lakota heritage, serving as a vital public, tribal, and land-grant institution. Under the leadership of President Dr. Erica Moore, SGU is dedicated to upholding its powerful motto, "Wahope unglawa sakapi hecel oyate ki Wolakota gluha tokatakiya unya pi kte," fostering wisdom and community for future generations.

Established in 1970, the university was thoughtfully named in honor of the revered Brulé Lakota chief, Sinte Gleska. Its foundation was guided by esteemed Lakota elders and visionaries, including Stanley Red Bird Sr., who served as the founding Board President, and Joseph M. Marshall III, a pioneering figure as the first published writer in Lakota. A significant milestone in its history was achieved in 1994 when SGU earned its designation as a land-grant college, alongside 31 other tribal institutions, affirming its commitment to community service and practical education.

With a vibrant student body of approximately 1,000 individuals, Sinte Gleska University offers a unique educational experience deeply intertwined with cultural preservation and community development. Prospective students will find an environment that not only provides academic rigor but also actively celebrates and integrates Lakota language, history, and traditions, preparing graduates to contribute meaningfully to their communities and beyond.
