Snead State Community College

Welcome to Snead State Community College, an institution with a rich history spanning over a century. Founded in 1898, Snead State has evolved from its humble beginnings as a grade school for girls into a dynamic public community college, proudly serving 2507 students. It stands as a testament to enduring educational commitment, continually adapting to meet the needs of its community and students, offering a strong foundation for future success.

Snead State's journey began with the vision of Anna D. Elder, who established a grade school for girls. Its significance grew rapidly, leading to its oversight by the Methodist Episcopal Church and the addition of a high school. A pivotal moment came in 1906 when local benefactor John H. Snead's generous donation led to the school being renamed in his honor, solidifying its place in local history. This deep historical foundation imbues Snead State with a unique character, connecting today's students to a proud legacy of learning.

As education evolved, so did Snead State. It expanded its offerings by adding a junior college in 1935, gaining crucial accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1941 – a mark of its academic quality and commitment. In 1967, Snead State became the 15th college in the newly formed Alabama Community College System, further cementing its role as a vital pathway for higher education. With President Joe Whitmore leading the way, Snead State remains dedicated to providing accessible and impactful education, fostering academic growth and personal development within a supportive learning environment for all its students.
