About South Carolina State University
SC State: A historic HBCU empowering future leaders with knowledge, duty, and honor since 1896.
South Carolina State University stands as a proud public Historically Black College and University (HBCU) and a distinguished land-grant institution. Founded in 1896, it has been a cornerstone of education, guided by its motto, "Scientia, Officium, Honos" (Knowledge, Duty, Honor). With a vibrant student body of 2,649, SC State offers a nurturing environment where students are prepared to become impactful leaders and innovators across various fields.
The university's roots trace back to the South Carolina Agricultural and Mechanical Institute, established in 1872 under the 1862 Land Grant Act, initially operating within Claflin College. A pivotal moment arrived in 1896 when the South Carolina General Assembly enacted legislation to separate the institutions, giving birth to the Colored Normal Industrial Agricultural and Mechanical College of South Carolina. This act solidified its independent mission and laid the foundation for its enduring legacy as a vital educational institution.
As the decades progressed, particularly from the 1920s to the 1940s, academic programs garnered increasing focus, even as the challenges of the Great Depression led to the closure of some programs, like the university's high school. Resilience shone through, as New Deal Programs spurred significant developments, including the construction of Wilkinson Hall, which originally served as the university's first separate library building and now welcomes students as the home for Admissions and Financial Aid. This spirit of adaptability and commitment to student resources continues to define the SC State experience.
