South Carolina State University stands as a proud public, historically Black college and university (HBCU) with a rich land-grant heritage. Since its establishment, SCSU has been a beacon of opportunity and advancement, fostering an environment where 2,649 students thrive. The university's history is deeply intertwined with the pursuit of equitable education. Born from the South Carolina Agricultural and Mechanical Institute, which was initially part of Claflin College, SCSU gained its independent charter in 1896. It was then officially named The Colored Normal Industrial Agricultural and Mechanical College of South Carolina, a testament to its foundational role in providing higher education and vocational training for African American students during a challenging era. This separation marked a crucial step in its journey to becoming a cornerstone of education in the state.

Over the decades, SCSU has continuously evolved, expanding its academic programs and student body, particularly through the 1920s and 1940s. While facing economic challenges like the Great Depression, which led to the closure of some programs, the university utilized New Deal Programs to enhance its infrastructure, notably constructing Wilkinson Hall, its first dedicated library.
