Its story began with a pivotal moment in Georgia's history: the Perry Act of 1906, which sought to address the limited educational opportunities for rural residents. The Eleventh District A&M School, the precursor to SGSC, was a direct response, established to cater to the state's predominantly agricultural economy. Douglas, Georgia, distinguished itself among competing towns, securing the school's location with an impressive donation of $55,000 in cash, 30 acres of land, and an offer of free water and electricity for ten years.

Construction began swiftly, and by 1908, the agriculture school opened its doors, welcoming its first classes. Under the leadership of its first principal, Charles Wesley Davis, the school rapidly evolved. His mandate was clear: to develop a comprehensive high school curriculum that extended far beyond vocational studies, laying the groundwork for a broader educational experience.
