South Suburban College

South Suburban College stands as a cornerstone of accessible education in the South Suburban region, empowering students to achieve their academic and career aspirations. Established in 1927 as Thornton Junior College, it began as an extension of Thornton Township High School. Over decades, the college grew, embracing a comprehensive mission and expanding its reach to serve a broader community district, eventually relocating to its modern South Holland campus in 1972.

The college's journey reflects a commitment to its students and the changing needs of the area. Its transformation from Thornton Junior College to Thornton Community College, and finally to South Suburban College in 1988, highlights an ongoing effort to accurately represent its expansive geographic service and inclusive educational offerings. This dedication to community is further evidenced by the opening of the Oak Forest Center in 1992, designed to bring educational opportunities closer to residents in the western part of its district, including pathways to four-year degrees.

Today, under the leadership of President Lynette D. Stokes, South Suburban College continues its legacy as a vital public community college.
