South University-Richmond is part of a dynamic institution with a rich history dating back to 1899. As a private, for-profit university, it has continuously adapted its offerings, growing from its origins as a business college to encompass diverse academic programs, including significant health professions. With nearly 10,000 students, the university demonstrates a commitment to accessible education, including a substantial online presence.

Beginning as Draughan's Practical Business College in Savannah, Georgia, the institution underwent several transformations, notably being acquired by the South family in 1974 and eventually becoming South University in 2001 upon achieving master's level accreditation. A period of significant expansion followed in 2004, with the university opening eleven new locations and embracing online learning, making flexible education a cornerstone of its student experience, with over half of its students enrolled entirely online by 2013.

Academically, South University stands out for its innovative programs, particularly its Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) program launched in 2002. This program was the first health professions doctorate offered in the Savannah area and is one of a limited number nationwide that provides an accelerated pathway, allowing students to complete four academic years of study within just three calendar years, preparing graduates for timely entry into their careers.

Despite various ownership transitions, South University has remained dedicated to fostering student success, evidenced by milestones such as celebrating its largest graduating class with over 3,500 students in 2017. The university continues to evolve, aiming to provide career-focused individuals with relevant education and a supportive learning environment.
