South University-Richmond is part of a venerable institution with a rich history rooted in career-focused education, dating back to its founding in Savannah, Georgia, in 1899 as Draughan's Practical Business College. Initially dedicated to essential skills like accounting and shorthand, the university has continuously evolved, expanding its academic offerings and reach. This private, for-profit university has transformed significantly over the decades, upholding its commitment to practical learning.

Under various names, including South College, the institution earned master's level accreditation in 2001 and was renamed South University. This marked a pivotal moment, paving the way for substantial growth. The university quickly expanded its footprint beyond its original campus, opening eleven new locations and introducing comprehensive online programs. By 2013, a significant 52% of its student body was engaged in entirely online learning, showcasing its adaptability and commitment to accessible education.

A hallmark of its academic strength is the pioneering Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) program, launched in 2002, which was the first health professions doctorate of its kind in the Savannah area.
