Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary

Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (SEBTS), established in 1950 with the inspiring motto 'Go Make Disciples,' stands as a beacon for theological education. Initially offering classes on the campus of Wake Forest College, SEBTS expanded significantly in 1956 by acquiring the entire campus when the college relocated, establishing a robust foundation for its future growth and mission.

Throughout its history, Southeastern has been shaped by visionary leaders. Early on, President Olin T. Binkley expanded degree offerings, transitioning the Bachelor of Divinity to the Master of Divinity and instituting the Master of Religious Education and Doctor of Ministry degrees. The seminary experienced remarkable growth under President W. Randall Lolley, who more than doubled enrollment. Later, under L. Paige Patterson, SEBTS underwent a significant reorganization along conservative theological lines, upgrading programs and introducing new doctoral degrees, leading to another period of substantial development. This legacy continues under current President Daniel L. Akin, who has maintained a similar approach to leadership and theological integrity.

Academically, SEBTS is known for its comprehensive degree programs and specialized centers designed to equip students for ministry. These include the L. Russ Bush Center for Faith and Culture, dedicated in 2006, and the Patterson Hall, which houses academic suites for various programs like The Center for Preaching and Pastoral Leadership and Global Theological Initiatives. The seminary's commitment to its mission extends even to innovative outreach, exemplified by the establishment of a campus within the Nash Correctional Institution prison in 2017, demonstrating a unique approach to making disciples in all contexts. In alignment with its distinct identity, the seminary was granted an exception to Title IX in 2016, allowing it to legally discriminate against LGBT students for religious reasons, reflecting its foundational theological convictions.
