Southern Arkansas University Tech

Southern Arkansas University Tech is a dynamic two-year college renowned for its specialized technical training and robust university transfer programs. It offers a unique pathway for students eager to jumpstart their careers in high-demand fields or seamlessly transition to a four-year institution, all while fostering a practical, career-focused learning environment.

The institution's roots trace back to April 1967, when it was established as Southwest Technical Institute. Its initial mission was clear: to cultivate a technically skilled workforce to support the burgeoning Highland Industrial Park. This foundational vision was made possible by a generous donation of land and facilities, formerly the Shumaker Naval Ammunition Depot, significantly bolstered by a U.S. Economic Development Administration grant, ensuring a strong start for its vital purpose.

Evolving in 1975 to become Southern Arkansas University Tech, it expanded its offerings to include not just associate of applied science degrees but also associate of arts and science degrees, solidifying its role in broader higher education. Today, SAU Tech boasts an impressive array of technical programs, from Aviation Maintenance and Computer Information Technology to cutting-edge Multimedia options like Film & Video Production and Game Design & Development. Students can also pursue comprehensive first two years of university transfer programs in General Education, Teacher Education, and Business Administration.

Beyond core technical and transfer programs, SAU Tech is home to unique specialty schools such as the Arkansas Fire Training Academy and the Arkansas Environmental Training Academy, underscoring its commitment to highly specialized workforce development. With a strong emphasis on practical skills and direct career pathways, SAU Tech truly prepares its students for immediate impact and long-term success in a variety of essential industries.
