Southern College of Optometry (SCO), founded in 1932, stands as a premier private, non-profit institution solely dedicated to optometric education. From its establishment by ophthalmologist J.J. Horton, SCO has continuously evolved, adapting its facilities to provide an optimal learning environment. The college expanded significantly with a new clinical facility in 1953 and moved to its present comprehensive structure in 1970, which boasts multimedia classrooms, advanced laboratories, a vast library, and the vital Eye Institute outpatient clinic. This commitment to growth and modernization continued with a multimillion-dollar expansion in 2013, further enhancing classrooms, study areas, and labs, ensuring students learn in cutting-edge environments.

At the heart of SCO's academic strength is The Eye Center, a sprawling 46,000 square foot facility established in 2002. Recognized as one of the largest eye and vision centers in the United States, it provides an unparalleled clinical experience for students, serving a significant number of patients annually. Equipped with advanced examination rooms, technology-based testing, retinal laser and digital angiography centers, an optical shop, and on-site ophthalmology services, The Eye Center offers comprehensive, real-world training. Additionally, the establishment of the Hayes Center for Practice Excellence in 2005 underscores SCO's dedication to preparing students for successful and ethical professional careers, guided by President Lewis N. Reich since 2016.
