Southern University and A & M College

Southern University and A&M College, affectionately known as Southern University or SUBR, stands as Louisiana's largest Historically Black College or University (HBCU) and the flagship institution of the Southern University System. Located on a scenic 512-acre campus overlooking the Mississippi River in Baton Rouge, this public land-grant university offers a vibrant academic and student experience. Founded in 1880 by forward-thinking African-American political leaders, Southern University for Colored Students began in New Orleans before moving to its current Baton Rouge location in 1914. This move was crucial for expansion and to better serve rural Louisiana residents. Throughout its history, Southern has played a pivotal role in providing higher education for Black students, especially during an era of segregation. Notably, it established its own law program in 1947, which grew into the Southern University Law Center, ensuring access to legal education when other state institutions denied it. Between 1970 and 1990, it proudly became the nation's largest HBCU, leaving an indelible mark on educational access and opportunity.

Academically, Southern University is a powerhouse, achieving the R2 Carnegie Classification (Doctoral University; High Research Activity) in 2021—a significant milestone as the first HBCU in Louisiana to reach this status and one of only 11 nationwide. The university's commitment to excellence is further evidenced by its ranking 4th in the nation for baccalaureate-origin institution of Black male doctorate recipients between 2004 and 2013.
