The university's rich history dates back to 1867, when it was founded as a for-profit girls' school in post-Civil War Virginia. Its move to Buena Vista in 1900 marked a pivotal moment, taking residence in the majestic Buena Vista Hotel, now known as Main Hall and holding a distinguished place on the National Register of Historic Places. Over the decades, the institution transformed from Southern Seminary and Junior College, strengthening its academic offerings and adapting to changing educational landscapes, including adding college-level courses in the 1920s and transitioning to nonprofit status in 1959.

A significant turning point occurred in 1994 with the admission of male students, leading to its renaming as Southern Virginia College. Despite facing challenges, including a temporary loss of accreditation, the institution underwent a critical reorganization in 1996, eventually achieving full regional accreditation as Southern Virginia University in 2012.
