About Southwest Baptist University
Southwest Baptist University: A spirit of resilience and growth since 1878.
Step into Southwest Baptist University, a vibrant institution in Bolivar, Missouri, that embodies a remarkable legacy of resilience and continuous growth. Founded in 1878, SBU has transformed from a small college into a comprehensive university, overcoming significant challenges to build a thriving academic community. Its journey is a testament to unwavering determination, making it a compelling choice for students seeking an education grounded in history and forward-thinking innovation.
The university's history is particularly defined by pivotal moments of rebuilding and expansion. After its original Lebanon campus proved temporary, SBU found its permanent home in Bolivar in 1879. It faced devastating fires in 1910 and again in 1962, each time rising stronger from the ashes. The 1962 fire, in particular, catalyzed the acquisition of 102 acres, leading to the development of the modern Shoffner Campus that houses much of SBU today, expanding its footprint and facilities.
Academically, Southwest Baptist University offers a robust environment for learning and discovery. Students can pursue diverse fields within the College of Business and Computer Science, explore scientific breakthroughs in the Wheeler Science Center, or enter specialized health professions through the Mercy College of Nursing and Health Sciences and the School of Physical Therapy. The Bob R. Derryberry School of Communication Arts further enriches the academic landscape, providing varied opportunities for intellectual and professional development.
Life at SBU extends beyond the classroom, offering a dynamic student experience. The state-of-the-art Jane and Ken Meyer Wellness and Sports Center, opened in 2005, provides students with an indoor track, fitness center, pool, rock wall, and more, fostering a holistic approach to student well-being. With a history of overcoming adversity, including successfully exiting accreditation probation in 2023, SBU stands as a testament to its enduring commitment to academic excellence and a supportive, engaging campus community for all its students.
