Southwestern Michigan College

Established on November 19, 1964, Southwestern Michigan College emerged from the strong community support of Cass County voters, who approved a $1.5 million tax levy to bring this vision to life. This foundational commitment quickly transformed the educational landscape, shifting Cass County's ratio of high school graduates attending college from one of the lowest in the state to one of the highest in just a few years.

From its humble beginnings with 335 students in September 1966, the college experienced remarkable growth, surpassing 800 students by its second year of operation. Located on a 160-acre campus outside Dowagiac, Michigan, SMC was designed to be an accessible hub for local talent, offering a range of practical programs evidenced by the early establishment of vocational education and practical nursing departments.

Despite facing initial challenges, including a notable dispute over construction bids for its main buildings, the college persevered, driven by its mission to serve the region. Its history also includes a significant, though eventually resolved, clarification regarding the inclusion of part-time student employees in the state retirement system, highlighting its commitment to navigating complex operational landscapes while focusing on its core educational mission.
