Southwestern Michigan College

Southwestern Michigan College (SMC) stands as a testament to community vision and educational commitment, founded on November 19, 1964, after the voters of Cass County, Michigan, enthusiastically approved a $1.5 million tax levy. This pivotal decision quickly transformed the local educational landscape, shifting Cass County's college attendance rate from one of the state's lowest to among its highest. SMC rapidly became a vital hub, fostering growth and opportunity for its students and the surrounding region.

From its groundbreaking in Dowagiac in 1965 to the commencement of classes in September 1966, SMC quickly established itself as a robust learning environment. Despite early challenges, including a notable dispute over construction bids, the college persevered, building a 160-acre campus dedicated to practical education. Early leadership under President Nathan Ivey saw the establishment of key programs, including a practical nursing department and a strong vocational education focus, reflecting its commitment to hands-on learning and career readiness.

SMC's appeal was immediate and widespread; it enrolled 335 students in its inaugural month, surpassing all initial expectations, and grew to over 800 students in its second year. This remarkable growth underscored the community's demand for accessible, quality higher education. With early endowed scholarships demonstrating philanthropic support, Southwestern Michigan College continues its legacy of empowering students and enriching the community it proudly serves.
