Southwestern Michigan College

Southwestern Michigan College (SMC) was born from a powerful community vision, established on November 19, 1964, when Cass County voters approved a $1.5 million tax levy to create a local community college. Officially adopting its current name in March 1965, SMC quickly became a beacon of higher education, dramatically transforming the local landscape by shifting Cass County's college attendance rates from among the state's lowest to its highest.

Classes commenced in September 1966 on its sprawling 160-acre Dowagiac campus, quickly exceeding initial enrollment projections with 335 students. This rapid growth continued, with over 800 students enrolling in its second year. From its inception, SMC focused on providing accessible and practical education, including a strong vocational education program led by its first dean of vocational education, Francis Hiscok.

The college’s commitment to its students was evident early on, as it attracted community support like an endowed scholarship for female students from the Nineteenth Century Club. Despite initial challenges, including a significant contract dispute for its main buildings, SMC persevered, laying a robust foundation for an educational institution dedicated to serving the needs of its community and fostering student success.
