Spartanburg Methodist College

Spartanburg Methodist College (SMC), a private institution founded in 1911, stands as a beacon of educational opportunity with a remarkable and inspiring history. Born from the vision of David English Camak, SMC was initially established as the Textile Industrial Institute (TII) to address the pressing needs of southern cotton textile workers. This unique origin story highlights SMC's foundational commitment to providing accessible education and practical skills, a dedication that continues to shape its ethos today. The college's early years were marked by significant growth and community support. From its humble beginnings in a vacant house, TII quickly gained momentum, acquiring its present campus in 1913. It was here that students themselves helped construct the iconic Charles P. Hammond Hall, a building that still serves as a residence hall, embodying the spirit of hard work and collective endeavor that defines SMC. The institution evolved into a mission of the South Carolina Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, further solidifying its values-based foundation and commitment to service.

SMC's pioneering spirit was evident in its early adoption of a work-and-study model, designed to help students finance their education while gaining valuable experience. Although the Model Mill, a unique venture to combine education with hands-on production, faced challenges, the core principle of integrating practical experience with academic learning has remained influential.
