Spartanburg Methodist College

Spartanburg Methodist College (SMC), a private institution founded in 1911, stands out for its deep-rooted commitment to accessible education and its unique origins. With a student body of 1,220, SMC operates under the inspiring Latin motto "Deus Providet" (God Provides), reflecting its Methodist heritage and enduring spirit of support for its community.

SMC's history is particularly compelling. It began as the Textile Industrial Institute (TII), a visionary project initiated by David English Camak in 1911 to address the significant challenges faced by southern cotton textile workers. From its humble beginnings as an elementary and secondary school in a vacant house, TII quickly gained momentum with vital support from local leaders like Walter S. Montgomery. By 1913, the college acquired its current campus, and students themselves contributed to its growth, notably by constructing Charles P. Hammond Hall, which remains a residence hall today.

The institution pioneered an innovative work-study model designed to make education accessible. The Model Mill, opened in 1919, was a groundbreaking initiative that allowed TII to perfectly blend education and practical work, offering students valuable skills in weaving, dyeing, and material enhancement. Although the Model Mill faced financial hurdles and closed in 1922, forcing students to seek off-campus employment, this period underscores SMC's enduring adaptability and the profound dedication of its students to pursuing their education.
