Spartanburg Methodist College

Spartanburg Methodist College (SMC) stands as a testament to resilience and dedication, offering a unique educational experience rooted in its rich history. As a private college, SMC embraces its motto, "Deus Providet" (God Provides), guiding its mission to nurture students and provide pathways to success. With a vibrant student body of approximately 1,220, SMC offers an intimate and supportive environment where individuals are empowered to thrive academically and personally.

SMC's story begins in 1911 as the Textile Industrial Institute (TII), a visionary endeavor founded by David English Camak. Deeply moved by the struggles of southern cotton textile workers, Camak established TII to provide essential education and opportunities. The college quickly became a mission of the South Carolina Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, symbolizing a commitment to community upliftment and the belief that education should be accessible to all, regardless of background.

The early years were marked by incredible student involvement and innovation. In 1913, the college acquired its current campus, and students themselves began constructing Charles P. Hammond Hall, a building that still serves as a residence hall today. The pioneering spirit continued with the opening of the Model Mill in 1919, an ambitious project designed to integrate education with practical work experience. While the Model Mill faced challenges and eventually closed in 1922, the core principle of combining learning with real-world application, and the resilience to adapt, remained a defining characteristic of the institution.

Today, Spartanburg Methodist College continues to honor its foundational principles by fostering a supportive learning environment.
