St Petersburg College

St. Petersburg College (SPC) stands as a landmark institution in Florida's educational landscape, celebrated for its pioneering spirit and unwavering commitment to accessible higher education. Established on September 12, 1927, as St. Petersburg Junior College (SPJC) during a period of economic uncertainty, it proudly holds the distinction of being Florida's first two-year institution. Founded to provide affordable, local access to college education, SPJC initially served 102 students with 14 faculty members, quickly becoming a vital community resource by granting its first 48 graduates in 1929, many of whom became certified teachers.

Over its rich history, SPC has consistently evolved to meet the needs of its students and the state. After starting in a high school wing and then a former high school, the college erected its first permanent campus in 1941, now known as the St. Petersburg/Gibbs Campus. A significant transformation occurred in 1948 when SPJC converted from a private to a public institution, further broadening access. The college also demonstrated an early commitment to inclusivity by merging with Gibbs Junior College, one of Florida's original Black colleges, in 1965.

In 2001, SPC reached a defining milestone, becoming the first two-year college in Florida authorized by the Legislature to offer bachelor’s degrees. This pivotal moment led to its name change to St. Petersburg College and the adoption of the Titan mascot, solidifying its role as a comprehensive educational provider. Today, SPC continues to offer diverse opportunities, including three Collegiate High Schools that allow students to earn college credits early, building on nearly a century of providing quality, accessible education and preparing graduates for successful careers and continued learning.
