Stevens Institute of Technology

Stevens Institute of Technology, established in 1870, stands as one of the nation's oldest technological universities, proudly holding the distinction of being the first college in America solely dedicated to mechanical engineering. Nestled on a picturesque 55-acre campus atop Castle Point in Hoboken, New Jersey, this private research university embodies its Latin motto, "Per aspera ad astra" ("Through adversity to the stars"), inspiring students to reach new heights.

The institution owes its foundational legacy to the visionary Stevens family, often called "America's First Family of inventors." Colonel John Stevens acquired the land in 1784, and it was his son, Edwin Augustus Stevens, who, in 1868, bequeathed the land and funds to establish this groundbreaking "institution of learning." His wife, Martha Bayard Stevens, played a crucial role in organizing the institute, including the hiring of its first president.

Academically, Stevens is classified as an "R2: Doctoral University – High research activity," reflecting its commitment to advanced inquiry. Schaefer Jr., School of Engineering and Science; the School of Business; and the School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences.
