Stewart School

Stewart School, Cuttack, stands as a beacon of academic excellence and historical significance in Eastern India. Founded in 1882, this venerable Anglo-Indian institution has consistently nurtured bright minds, with its students frequently ranking among the top ten in Eastern Indian Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) schools. It proudly holds the distinction of being the oldest among the five Stewart Schools managed by the Diocese of Cuttack, Church of North India, embodying a rich heritage and a commitment to quality education.

The school's journey began as the European Orphanage School in November 1882, an initiative by Chennai-born Briton Dr. William Day Stewart, a civil surgeon in Cuttack. Over the years, it evolved, first becoming the Protestant European School in 1891 – a pivotal moment when it opened its doors to Indian students. The school was re-christened Stewart School in 1919 to honor its visionary founder. Its academic stature grew steadily, achieving recognition as a Higher Elementary School in 1910 and later, in 1924, becoming a Junior Secondary School and a Cambridge Examinations center.

Today, Stewart School is affiliated with the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), New Delhi, an affiliation established in 1974. As a Christian Minority Educational Institution, it operates as a Charitable Un-Aided Minority Educational body, relying solely on student fees for its development, maintenance, and staff salaries. This unique operational model underscores its dedication to providing quality education without external financial assistance, driven by a 'no profit' ethos. The school's principal also holds a distinctive role as the State's sole non-official representative on the Inter-State Board for Anglo-Indian Education, reflecting its significant cultural and educational influence.
