Stonehill College

Stonehill College, a distinguished private institution founded in 1948 by the Holy Cross Fathers, embodies its motto "Lux et Spes" (Light and Hope) through a commitment to fostering intellectual growth and a vibrant community. The college's rich history began with the acquisition of the expansive Ames estate in 1935. Officially chartered in 1948, Stonehill welcomed its inaugural class of 134 men, holding early classes within the historic mansion and Ames Gym. A pivotal moment in its development was the decision in the fall of 1951 to embrace coeducation, welcoming its first 19 women and setting the stage for its inclusive identity. The continuous evolution of its campus, from initial historic structures to modern academic centers like the Shields Science Center, reflects its unwavering dedication to providing state-of-the-art learning environments.

Academically, Stonehill is dedicated to preparing students for contemporary careers, highlighted by the establishment of the Leo J. Meehan School of Business in 2017. Made possible by a significant $10 million donation, this school offers comprehensive programs in accounting, finance, international business, management, marketing, economics, and healthcare administration. Beyond rigorous academics, Stonehill students benefit from a rich campus life, supported by student-run initiatives such as *The Summit* newspaper, published since 1949, all set against the backdrop of a beautiful 540-acre campus.
