Established in Portland in 1974 as The Court Reporting Institute, the college initially played a vital role in supporting the legal community. Its journey saw it evolve into the College of Legal Arts, expanding its offerings to include Legal Secretarial and Paralegal programs. A pivotal shift occurred in 1995 with the introduction of its first medical program, medical transcription, foreshadowing its future direction. The acquisition by Cascade Education, LLC in 2007 further accelerated this transformation, leading to a complete rebrand as Sumner College in 2009 and the launch of its foundational nursing program.

Today, Sumner College is renowned for its comprehensive nursing education. In 2012, it achieved a significant milestone by becoming the second proprietary school in Oregon approved to offer an Associate level Registered Nursing Program (AAS). Continuing its commitment to accessible and advanced education, the college introduced a 100% online RN to BSN course in 2020, and in 2023, launched its Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree program.
