Established in 1965 by the SUNY Board of Trustees, Old Westbury began its impactful journey with a clear vision: to create a university deeply rooted in principles of social justice. After an initial period at Planting Fields, the institution moved to its current, beautiful 'Broad Hollow' estate in 1971. Its first president, John D. Maguire, a noted civil rights activist, laid the groundwork for an institution dedicated to equity. This commitment was further cemented with the appointment of L. Eudora Pettigrew in 1986, who made history as the first African-American college president in the entire SUNY system.

Today, having officially gained university status in 2023, SUNY Old Westbury continues its legacy as a dynamic hub for learning and growth.
