SUNY Polytechnic Institute

SUNY Polytechnic Institute, often called SUNY Poly, stands as a dynamic public university within the esteemed State University of New York (SUNY) system. Established in 1966 as the Upper Division College at Herkimer/Rome/Utica, SUNY Poly has a rich history of growth and evolution. Initially serving as a transfer institution, it progressed from offering classes in temporary locations to developing its permanent 762-acre Marcy campus in the 1980s. Throughout its history, the institution adapted its name, becoming the State University of New York College of Technology at Utica–Rome in 1977, and then SUNYIT in 1989. A significant milestone occurred in 2003 when it admitted its first class of freshmen, transforming into a four-year institution.

In 2014, the university adopted its current name, SUNY Polytechnic Institute, following a merger that aimed to create a nanotechnology hub in the Mohawk Valley. Although the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering later returned to the University at Albany in 2023, SUNY Poly continues its strong focus on technology and applied sciences. The campus is a hub of innovation, notably hosting a semiconductor manufacturer, Wolfspeed, at its Marcy Nanocenter since 2022, providing real-world connection to its academic mission.
