Swarthmore College

Swarthmore College stands as a distinguished private liberal arts institution, deeply rooted in its Quaker founding principles. With a significant endowment of $2.8 billion and the inspiring motto "Mind the Light," Swarthmore is recognized for its rigorous academic environment and commitment to social engagement. It carved a unique path from its inception, becoming the only college founded by the Hicksite branch of the Society of Friends and a trailblazer in coeducation.

Established in 1864 by Deborah Fisher Wharton and Joseph Wharton, alongside a committee of Quaker leaders, Swarthmore quickly set a progressive tone. Opening its doors for classes in 1869, it was one of the first truly coeducational colleges, a vision championed by figures like Lucretia Mott. This commitment to equality was further exemplified by Helen Magill, a member of the first graduating class in 1873, who went on to become the first woman in the United States to earn a Ph.D.

The early 20th century saw a pivotal shift under President Frank Aydelotte, who introduced the acclaimed Honors program, drawing from his experience as a Rhodes Scholar.
