Sweet Briar College

Sweet Briar College stands as a distinguished private women's liberal arts college, nestled in the heart of Virginia. With a close-knit community of approximately 460 students, Sweet Briar offers an intimate and empowering educational experience designed specifically for women. It continues the legacy of its founder, focusing on holistic development and intellectual rigor within a supportive environment, truly embodying its motto: "Rosam quae meruit ferat" (Let her bear the rose she has earned).

The college's rich history begins with the Sweet Briar plantation, inherited by its visionary founder, Indiana Fletcher Williams. After the tragic loss of her daughter, Maria Georgiana "Daisy" Williams, at age 16, Indiana dedicated her entire estate to establishing a school for young women, fulfilling a wish expressed by her late husband, James Henry Williams. The institution officially opened its doors in 1901. It's important to acknowledge the complex history of the land, which was operated as a plantation using enslaved labor by Indiana's father, Elijah Fletcher, who enslaved over 110 people. Post-emancipation, some formerly enslaved individuals and their descendants continued to contribute to the property, forging a lasting connection between the college and its community.
