Sweet Briar College

Sweet Briar College stands as a distinguished private women's liberal arts institution, established in 1901. With an intimate community of approximately 460 students, the college is dedicated to fostering intellectual growth and leadership among women, guided by its empowering motto: "Rosam quae meruit ferat" (Let her bear the rose she has earned).

The college's rich history is deeply intertwined with the land it occupies, formerly known as the Sweet Briar plantation. It was founded by Indiana Fletcher Williams as a heartfelt tribute to her cherished daughter, Maria Georgiana "Daisy" Williams, who tragically passed away at a young age. This unique origin story imbues the college with a profound sense of legacy and purpose.

Sweet Briar's history also acknowledges the complex past of the plantation, which utilized enslaved labor. Following emancipation in 1865, many formerly enslaved people and their descendants continued to live and work at Sweet Briar, contributing to its ongoing story. Today, some descendants maintain a connection to the college, underscoring a continuous and evolving relationship with its historical roots.

As a modern liberal arts college, Sweet Briar remains committed to providing a rigorous and supportive academic environment. Under the leadership of President Mary Pope M.
