Technical College of the Lowcountry

Technical College of the Lowcountry (TCL) stands as a vital public community college, serving 2,196 students across South Carolina's picturesque Lowcountry region. Under the leadership of President Richard J. Gough, TCL is dedicated to providing accessible and high-quality education, preparing its diverse student body for successful careers and continued personal growth within their communities.

What truly sets TCL apart is its profound and inspiring historical legacy. The institution traces its roots back to 1868 with the establishment of the Mather School by Rachel Crane Mather. This pioneering school was founded with the crucial mission of providing education for the children of newly freed slaves in Beaufort County, South Carolina, laying a foundation of opportunity and empowerment that continues to resonate through TCL's mission today.

Over the decades, this foundational institution evolved significantly. In 1967, the Mather School's operations were transferred to the State of South Carolina, marking its integration into the state's aggressively expanding technical college system. Through a series of name changes – from the Beaufort Regional Training Center to Beaufort Technical College – the institution expanded its reach to serve Colleton, Hampton, and Jasper counties, eventually adopting its current name, Technical College of the Lowcountry, in 1988 to reflect its comprehensive regional service.
