Texas A&M University-San Antonio (TAMU-SA) was born from a pivotal legislative vision to address a critical educational need in the historically underserved South Side of San Antonio. Established in 2009, its roots trace back to early 2000 with the passage of SB 629, authored by Senator Frank Madla, and the subsequent authorization of $40 million in tuition revenue bonds in 2006. What began as a system center offering junior and senior-level courses, championed by figures like Madla and Greg Garcia, rapidly evolved into a full-fledged public university, committed to bringing higher education directly to its community.

Today, TAMU-SA stands as a robust Master's college and university, providing students with a diverse array of academic pathways. It offers 30 majors and confers bachelor's and master's degrees through its four distinct colleges and schools: the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, the College of Education and Human Development, and the Office of Research and Graduate Studies. This comprehensive structure ensures that students can pursue a wide range of disciplines, all within a fully accredited institution recognized by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
