Texas Southmost College

Texas Southmost College (TSC) stands as a foundational institution in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, serving as a vital public junior college for students seeking to embark on their academic and career journeys. With a rich history spanning nearly a century, TSC has played a pivotal role in providing accessible higher education and workforce development for the region.

Established in 1926 as The Junior College of the Lower Rio Grande Valley, the institution began with a modest class of 84 students, holding classes in the old Brownsville High School. Over its early decades, the college navigated challenging periods, including the Great Depression and World War II, yet steadfastly continued its mission. Its name evolved from Brownsville Junior College in 1931 to its current designation, Texas Southmost College, in 1950.

A significant turning point came in 1948 when the college acquired the historic lands of the decommissioned Fort Brown, establishing its own dedicated campus. This expansion coincided with a substantial growth in enrollment, reaching approximately 1,250 students, signaling its burgeoning importance to the community. This period also saw the creation of a separate district, solidifying TSC's independent governance as part of the Southmost Union Junior College District.

Today, under the leadership of President Jesús Roberto Rodríguez, Texas Southmost College continues its legacy as a cornerstone of education in Southern Cameron County, offering a diverse and engaging student experience designed to prepare individuals for their next steps in a rapidly changing world.
