The Barber School

The Barber School stands as an independent educational institution with a rich history, embodying its motto "K through Life." Established in 1893, it has grown into a prestigious school, supported by a substantial $0.3 billion endowment. It is recognized for its comprehensive approach to education, cultivating student potential from early years through a structured academic journey.

The school's roots trace back to a distinguished lineage, beginning in 1891 with the Palo Alto Preparatory School for Boys. This institution evolved into Manzanita Hall by 1892, establishing itself as a dedicated boys' day and boarding school in 1893 – the same year The Barber School was founded. Manzanita Hall continued to develop, enrolling 24 students by 1894 and expanding to 60 boys by 1915, before being acquired and renamed Palo Alto Military Academy in 1919. This foundational history underscores the school's enduring commitment to rigorous education.

Today, The Barber School offers distinct academic experiences across its divisions. The Middle School, situated on the vibrant Union campus, fosters a dynamic learning environment, with a strong trend of students progressing seamlessly into the upper school. Younger learners thrive at the Lower School on the picturesque Bucknall campus, which was acquired in 1997. Here, students engage in a well-rounded experience, benefiting from offerings like an after-school orchestra, competitive sports, and a variety of enriching activities designed to nurture diverse talents and interests.
