The academy's foundation in 2011 was a direct response to a significant gap in national actor training. After Trinity College discontinued its acting course in 2007, a national forum recommended the urgent creation of a university-accredited dramatic arts academy. Spearheaded by Danielle Ryan and generously funded by The Cathal Ryan Trust, The Lir rose to meet this call, establishing its purpose-built premises in Dublin's vibrant Grand Canal Dock.
