The New School

Founded in 1919 as The New School for Social Research, its original mission was a bold commitment to academic freedom and intellectual inquiry, serving as a welcoming home for progressive thinkers. Historically, The New School holds a significant place as an institution dedicated to freedom. In 1933, it notably established the "University in Exile" and the "École libre des hautes études," providing a crucial haven for scholars, largely Jewish, who were fleeing Nazi Germany and other oppressive regimes in Europe. This legacy of intellectual sanctuary and forward-thinking scholarship has shaped its identity, culminating in the institution being formally renamed The New School in 2005, while its original graduate division reclaimed the name The New School for Social Research.

Today, this private research university thrives with over 10,000 students enrolled in undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
