UT Martin's roots trace back to 1900, originally as the Hall-Moody Institute, a Baptist-affiliated school that evolved from elementary grades to teacher training. Facing financial hardship in the mid-1920s, the institution was acquired by the state of Tennessee in 1927, becoming the University of Tennessee Junior College.
