The University of the South

Nestled on the serene Monteagle Mountain, The University of the South, affectionately known as Sewanee, stands as a distinctive institution with a rich heritage. Founded in 1857 by ten Southern dioceses of the Episcopal Church, it was envisioned as a regional academic pillar, free from Northern influences. Its breathtaking location, chosen for its strategic proximity to Chattanooga and unique setting, offers an inspiring backdrop for learning and personal growth.

Sewanee's history is one of remarkable resilience. Though its cornerstone was laid in 1860, the university faced destruction during the Civil War. Yet, fueled by determination and leadership, particularly from "Re-Founder" Charles Todd Quintard, it resumed operations in 1866 and has maintained continuous service ever since. This era of rebuilding fostered a deep-seated spirit of community and perseverance that continues to define the institution today. Its past also includes a vital role in national service, as evidenced by its participation in the V-12 Navy College Training Program during World War II.

Academically, The University of the South is known for its strong liberal arts college and its foundational School of Theology. Expanding its graduate offerings, the university established the School of Letters in 2006, providing advanced programs for aspiring writers and literary scholars. While historically home to schools of dentistry, engineering, law, medicine, and nursing, Sewanee strategically honed its focus to excel in its core areas, offering a high-quality education shaped by its unique traditions and stunning natural environment, all supported by a substantial $0.5 billion endowment.
