Thiel College

Thiel College, established in 1866, is a private institution with a rich legacy of academic excellence and community engagement. Led by President Susan Traverso, it continues its tradition of fostering intellectual curiosity and personal growth, guided by its enduring motto: "Lux Mundi, Verbum Dei" – Light of the World, Word of God.

Born as "Thiel Hall" and notably coeducational from its very inception, Thiel College has always been forward-thinking. From its humble beginnings in Philipsburg, it swiftly evolved, receiving its charter in 1870 and establishing its permanent home in Greenville, Pennsylvania. This early commitment to accessible education for all set a foundational tone for its future, shaping an environment where students could discover their unique gifts.

What truly distinguishes Thiel are the remarkable individuals it has honored throughout its history. The college proudly awarded Amelia Earhart an honorary Doctor of Science in 1932, a recognition she deeply valued. Decades later, in 1969, Thiel was also the first institution to bestow an honorary degree upon the beloved Fred Rogers, who used the occasion to deliver a memorable address on "Encouraging Creativity." Even U.S. Vice-President Richard M. Nixon received an honorary degree in 1959, underscoring the institution's historical significance in public recognition.

Today, Thiel College thrives with a dedicated faculty of about 110 full- and part-time members, serving just under 1,000 students. Under the leadership of its first female president, Thiel continues to build on its storied past, offering an engaging and supportive environment for the next generation of leaders and innovators.
