Thiel College

Thiel College stands as a historic private institution with a rich legacy rooted in its founding in 1866. Originally established as a coeducational institution from its very beginning, Thiel has always been forward-thinking, fostering an environment that values diverse contributions. It is particularly known for its distinction in recognizing influential figures, having awarded honorary degrees to pioneering individuals such as aviation icon Amelia Earhart, beloved children's educator Fred Rogers, and former U.S. Vice-President Richard M. Nixon.

The college's journey began as "Thiel Hall" in 1866, a collaborative effort stemming from a meeting between William Passavant and A. Louis Thiel. By 1869, it was officially decided that Thiel Hall would evolve into a full-fledged college, serving western Pennsylvania. The institution received its charter from the Pennsylvania government on September 1, 1870, at which point it relocated to its current home in Greenville and was incorporated as Thiel College. This foundational history underscores its enduring commitment to education and community.

Today, Thiel College continues its tradition of leadership under President Susan Traverso, who made history in 2016 as the college's 20th and first female president. With approximately 110 full- and part-time faculty members dedicated to student success, the college provides a focused learning environment for just under 1,000 students.
