About Towson University

Maryland's first teacher-training school, shaping educators since 1865.

Towson University began its journey with a pivotal mission: to educate Maryland's future teachers. Established by the Maryland General Assembly in 1865, the institution, then known as the "Maryland State Normal School" (M.S.N.S.), opened its doors on January 15, 1866, marking a significant step in the state's modern educational reforms. This pioneering school started modestly with just eleven students and three faculty members at Red Man's Hall in Baltimore, under the leadership of its first principal, McFadden Alexander Newell.

The initial success and rapid growth of the M.S.N.S. quickly necessitated larger facilities. After outgrowing its first temporary home, it relocated in 1873 to a new interim site on North Charles and East Franklin Streets. By 1876, the General Assembly had funded a purpose-built facility, allowing the Normal School to move its expanding faculty and 206 students into a landmark building in West Baltimore, solidifying its presence and commitment to educational excellence.

Though its name and scope have expanded over the decades, Towson University's foundation is firmly rooted in this historical commitment to public education and teacher training, laying the groundwork for what would become a major institution in Maryland.
