Towson University

Towson University, originally established in 1865 as the Maryland State Normal School, holds a proud place in the history of education, becoming the state's very first teacher-training institution. Born out of the progressive educational reforms following the Civil War, its founding represented a significant commitment by the Maryland General Assembly to develop a robust public education system for the state. What began modestly with just eleven students and three faculty members in Baltimore's Red Man's Hall quickly blossomed, demonstrating an immediate and pressing need for qualified educators.

Under the leadership of its first principal, McFadden Alexander Newell, the school rapidly expanded, graduating its initial class of sixteen students in June 1866. This early success underscored its vital role in preparing the next generation of teachers for Maryland. The burgeoning enrollment soon necessitated moves to larger facilities, from a temporary residence in the William Howard Greek Revival mansion to a dedicated landmark building in West Baltimore by 1876, signifying the institution's growing prominence and enduring mission.
