Towson University

Towson University holds a distinguished place in Maryland's educational landscape, tracing its roots back to 1865 when the Maryland General Assembly established the state's very first teacher-training school. Originally known as the Maryland State Normal School (M.S.N.S.), it officially opened its doors on January 15, 1866, as a cornerstone of the post-Civil War educational reforms.
