United Lutheran Seminary

United Lutheran Seminary (ULS) represents a powerful legacy of faith, education, and American history. Founded in 2017 through the merger of two historic institutions, ULS builds upon nearly two centuries of preparing leaders for ministry in the Lutheran tradition and beyond. The roots of ULS trace back to 1826 with the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, which proudly holds the distinction of being the oldest Lutheran seminary in the Americas. This foundational institution quickly became a pivotal center of learning, and in 1832, it found its permanent home on Seminary Ridge, overlooking what would become one of the most hallowed grounds in American history. In July 1863, the seminary campus itself transformed into a witness to the Battle of Gettysburg, with its original building, Schmucker Hall, serving as the largest fixed field hospital during the conflict. Today, Schmucker Hall stands as a museum, an enduring testament to the battle, the role of faith in freedom, and 19th-century medical practices.
