United States Air Force Academy

The United States Air Force Academy (USAFA), nestled immediately north of Colorado Springs, Colorado, stands as a beacon for aspiring military leaders. Established in 1954, it is the youngest of the five U.S. service academies, yet holds a pivotal role in shaping the future of air and space power. With the revered motto, "Integrity First, Service before self, Excellence in all we do," USAFA is dedicated to educating and commissioning officers for both the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Space Force.

The vision for a dedicated air academy emerged almost with the dawn of military aviation, with early advocates like Lt. Col. A.J. Hanlon in 1918 and General Billy Mitchell in 1925 championing its necessity. After years of deliberation, the concept gained significant momentum with the establishment of a separate U.S. Air Force in 1947. Following a recommendation from a Service Academy Board, led by none other than then-Columbia University President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Congress passed legislation in 1954 to create the academy. The chosen site, Colorado Springs, was announced in June 1954, setting the stage for this distinguished institution.

Admission to USAFA is highly competitive, requiring a Congressional nomination, ensuring only the most promising candidates are considered. Once accepted, cadets embark on a rigorous four-year program where they receive full tuition, room and board, and a monthly stipend, all sponsored by the Air Force. Graduates are awarded a Bachelor of Science degree and commissioned as second lieutenants, ready to serve their nation. By their third year, cadets commit to an eight-year service obligation, typically five years of active duty, solidifying their path as leaders in the U.S. military.
