United States Merchant Marine Academy

The United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) stands as a unique federal service academy, a pillar comparable to West Point or Annapolis, but dedicated to developing officers for the U.S. Merchant Marine and serving the nation's critical commerce and defense needs. Situated on Walter Chrysler's former estate in Kings Point, New York, USMMA prepares its midshipmen for a life of service at sea and ashore, upholding a tradition of valor and professional excellence.

Born out of a national imperative for standardized maritime training after the tragic 1934 SS Morro Castle fire, the USMMA was formally established with the Merchant Marine Act of 1936. Rapidly developed during World War II, it quickly scaled its operations to meet emergency needs, with President Franklin D. Roosevelt himself dedicating the academy in 1943. From an accelerated wartime curriculum, it evolved into a fully accredited, four-year college-level program by 1949, granting Bachelor of Science degrees and cementing its role as a permanent institution by 1956. This forward-thinking institution also made history in 1974 as the first federal service academy to enroll female students.

Midshipmen at USMMA undergo a rigorous curriculum that blends academic study with invaluable hands-on shipboard training, often referred to as "Sea Year." This immersive experience has seen them serve in combat zones across the globe since WWII, playing pivotal roles in national sealift operations from the Persian Gulf War to humanitarian missions in Somalia, and recently, manning ships during the COVID-19 logistical crisis. The academy's deep commitment to service is symbolized by its unique regimental battle standard, emblazoned with "142" to honor fallen midshipmen. While the "Sea Year" program has faced recent scrutiny and reforms regarding student safety, the academy remains dedicated to fostering leaders who are ready to respond to national emergencies and contribute significantly to global maritime operations.
