Unity Environmental University, proudly dubbed "America's Environmental University," is a distinctive private institution renowned for its deep commitment to environmental education and innovative learning pathways. What began in 1965 as the Unity Institute of Liberal Arts and Sciences, founded by local business leaders aiming to counter economic decline, gradually transformed into an environmental powerhouse.

This pivotal shift occurred in 1977 when the college fully embraced its environmental mission, a decision that would redefine its legacy. Unity's dedication to sustainability is demonstrated through its groundbreaking initiatives, including building the nation's first Passivhaus college residence in 2011 and becoming the first U.S. college to divest its endowment from fossil fuels in 2012. This forward-thinking approach has attracted significant support, notably a $10 million gift in 2011 that substantially grew its endowment.

Today, Unity Environmental University stands out for its adaptable and accessible educational models. With a robust online presence established in 2016 for master's degrees and 2018 for undergraduate programs, it serves a large and growing student body. While its traditional residential model evolved, the university now offers in-person opportunities in New Gloucester and through a unique partnership allowing residential students to utilize facilities at the University of Southern Maine. This flexible approach, complemented by the Technical Institute for Environmental Professions, ensures diverse pathways for students passionate about environmental careers.
