The university's history is a testament to its adaptive spirit, originating in 1951 in Los Angeles as Grantham Radio License School. Founded by World War II veteran Donald Grantham, it initially helped fellow veterans secure Federal Communications Commission certifications, establishing a foundational ethos of practical, career-focused education. Through the decades, it evolved, expanding its reach with additional campuses and gaining formal U.S. Department of Education recognition and accreditation. By 1968, it became Grantham College of Engineering, solidifying its focus on exclusively distance learning programs.

Demonstrating remarkable resilience, Grantham faced a significant challenge in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina devastated its Slidell, Louisiana campus. Yet, within days, the university was operational again from temporary offices in Kansas City, Missouri, showcasing an unwavering dedication to its students.
