University of Detroit Mercy

The University of Detroit Mercy stands as a vibrant testament to enduring educational traditions, uniquely forged from the legacies of two esteemed religious orders. This institution offers prospective students a rich tapestry of history, intellectual rigor, and compassionate service, deeply embedded in the heart of Detroit.

Its story began in 1877 when the Society of Jesus, under the leadership of John Baptist Miège, founded Detroit College near downtown Detroit. This institution steadily grew, evolving into the University of Detroit in 1911 and expanding with a second campus in 1927 under President John P. McNichols. For decades, the University of Detroit upheld the Jesuit commitment to academic excellence and critical thinking.

Complementing this rich heritage, the Sisters of Mercy established Mercy College of Detroit in 1941, focusing on service and compassionate care. A pivotal moment arrived in 1990 when these two powerful educational forces united, consolidating to form the University of Detroit Mercy. This merger created a distinctive academic environment, blending the Jesuit pursuit of knowledge with the Mercy tradition of service. The university continues to evolve, with Donald Taylor appointed as its 26th president in July 2022, leading it into a new era while honoring its profound roots.
